All About Lake Lizzie, MN
Located six miles northeast of Pelican Rapids in Otter Tail County, Lake Lizzie is a 4,035-acre lake connected to Pelican Lake and Prairie Lake via the Pelican River in the Central Region of Minnesota. It is located in the Otter Tail River Watershed in the “Land of Ten Thousand Lakes.” Most of the shoreline on the north and west sides have been developed with homes, cottages, and resorts that offer real estate opportunities and vacation rentals. Lake Lizzie, which has a maximum depth of 66 feet in the northern part of the L-shaped lake, has depths often less than 10 feet in the southern portion creating a swamp-like appearance with water-dwelling plants covering the surface.
Popular with local anglers, Lake Lizzie is best known for its population of bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. Both open season fishing and ice fishing are favorite pastimes on the lake, making it a year-round fishing venue. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stocks Lake Lizzie with 2.4 million walleye biennially, making it one of the most prolific walleye fishing lakes in Minnesota. Lake access is located one mile east of State Highway 59 on the western shoreline.
Hunting is also popular along the southern portion of the lake in the wetlands with duck and geese hunters. Other activities on Lake Lizzie include swimming, boating, water skiing, camping, and bird watching. Several campgrounds and resorts dot the shoreline along with private vacation rentals and cottages.
For activities off the lake, visit Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge only 15 miles away. Located in the heart of the tall grass prairie’s historic range, the refuge works to maintain and restore native prairie habitat for nesting waterfowl and other grasslands birds. Other wetland prairie grass areas you can visit are the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District and the Fergus Falls Wetland Management District. Both wetland districts, which are less than 30 minutes away, provide protection to native grasslands and the waterfowl of Minnesota.
Also close to Lake Lizzie is Pelican Rapids, a favorite summer and winter vacation destination spot for local Minnesotans. Ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling and just some of the winter sports enjoyed around Pelican Rapids. Maplewood State Park, which is at the doorstep of Pelican Rapids, boasts the “world’s largest pelican.” There are over 150 bird species, 50 mammal species, and 25 kinds of reptiles and amphibians in the park making it a great place to experience wildlife. Artifacts have been found in the park dating back to at least 6,000 years with modern habitation beginning around 150 years ago. The main activity in the park is hiking but you can also fish, picnic, camp, swim, and boat.
Lake Lizzie, just one of the 1000 lakes in Otter Tail County, is an ideal get-away lake whether you visit in the dead of winter or the bloom of summer.
