A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. - from "Walden, Or Life In The Woods" by Henry David Thoreau, 1854. [See Thoreau's favorite lake.]
Lake Lovers Love Lakelubbers.
The idea for Lakelubbers.com was developed in 2007 by co-founders Brian and Lisa Raub when they moved to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Their objective was to create a database of lakes and reservoirs worldwide - to provide easy access to information for water enthusiasts looking for lakes' great recreational, vacation, and retirement opportunities.
Descriptive and anecdotal information would be provided on each lake along with lake statistics, fish species, recreational activity summaries, and more. Each lake page could include advertising by businesses/individuals whose products and services meet the needs and wants of lake visitors and residents.
Today, Lakelubbers.com covers 2,150+ lakes – nearly 1,650 in the United States, and about 500 more in 84 other countries. Our lake descriptions incorporate the information listed above - and more. The advertising proved unproductive, so we eliminated most of it.
We feature the world's best known lakes, plus unusual lakes, "lakes in the news," and lakes that our visitors request. There's no "official" minimum size (in surface area or volume) that defines a lake, but 75% of the lakes on Lakelubbers have a surface area of one square mile (640 acres) or more. The largest 40 of the world's lakes each cover millions of acres. 80 of Earth's lakes include more than 10 million acre-feet of water, and just one acre-foot equals 325 million gallons! The world's deepest lake drops 5,314 feet - more than a mile - from its surface to 3,818 feet below sea level, while the world's highest elevated lakes sit more than 15,000 feet above sea level. Just 40 of the world's lakes have shorelines that exceed 1,000 miles.
With the assistance of the many excellent researchers and writers appreciatively listed below, we have made it easy for you to find lakes near and far, to learn about their attributes, and then to find, visit, and enjoy them.
What's a Lakelubber? A Lakelubber is a person who loves lakes -- a connoisseur of inland bodies of water. "Lakelubber" is not yet in any dictionary ("landlubber" is), but we hope to remedy that. Lake Lovers Love Lakelubbers!
