All About Lake Geneva

Lake Locations: USA - US South Region - Florida - North Florida -

Tucked away in the northeastern Florida, Lake Geneva has over 1,600 acres of clean, clear water to explore. The lake is full of fish with plenty of room for both anglers and boaters. A beach along the northern shore makes the ideal place for families with children to picnic, play and swim. Lake Geneva is the perfect destination for a getaway or for an extended stay.

Part of a chain of lakes known as the Alligator Creek system, Lake Geneva is in Clay County. Known for its karst terrain, the region is characterized by the collapse of the limestone bedrock and the creation of sinkhole lakes. Lake Geneva is linked to Lakes Lowry, Magnolia, Brooklyn and Blue Pond in a chain by Alligator Creek. Primary inflow into the lakes is from rainfall and outflow is through Alligator Creek and seepage into the Florida aquifer. Many of the lakes in the region have sandy bottoms and can loose significant amounts of water in times of drought. The St. Johns River Water Management District oversees water levels and conditions on the lakes.

Lake Geneva has suffered from drought conditions in the past which can limit boating. When the rain returns, however, the lake returns to normal levels as well, and the water that is in the lake is clear all the way to the bottom. Lake Geneva is popular with anglers, and it is full of largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish. Access is from a good public boat ramp.

The City of Keystone Heights stretches along the northern shore of Lake Geneva. Established in the early 1920’s by settlers from Pennsylvania, the city was named in honor of the “Keystone State.” Keystone Heights has shops, restaurants, and museums along with a variety of accommodations including waterfront vacation rentals. There is also real estate for sale for visitors wishing to extend their stays. Residential development rings Lake Geneva, and the City of Keystone Heights manages Keystone Beach with access to the lake.

Near Lake Geneva in Clay County, the Mike Roess Gold Head State Park is one of the oldest state parks in Florida. Built on what was a 2,000 acres Civilian Conservation Corps site the park includes trails for hiking and horseback riding. There is also camping and cabins including some still showing the CCC’s influence. White tailed deer, gopher tortoise, turkeys and pocket gophers all make their home in the park, and there is an abundance of red tailed hawks, water and wading birds and even the occasional bald eagle.

With its beautiful, clear water and abundant fish, Lake Geneva is a fantastic north Florida getaway. Add the amenities and easy accessibility of the City of Keystone Heights on its shore and Lake Geneva is sure to have something to please everyone. Whether it is lounging on a beach, swimming in the clean water or fishing in the early morning light, Lake Geneva has an activity to suit every taste.
