Whether you are looking for relaxation in a peaceful, countryside location or four-season outdoor adventure, Schroon Lake is an exciting lake resort area nestled in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of New York state. Located in Essex and Warren Counties, the Township of Schroon Lake and the hamlet of Adirondack border the lake.
Lakefront cabin rentals, campgrounds and bed and breakfast inns offer any visitor to Schroon Lake a great place to rest while enjoying the local hospitality. Eagle Point Campground, operated by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), is located on the western shore of Schroon Lake and offers different size accommodations for tents and RVs up to 30 feet long. The DEC also operates the Scaroon Manor Day Use Area on Schroon Lake’s western shore at Taylor’s Point, offering the public a beach, swimming area, bathhouse, and picnic sites. This historical resort was acquired by New York State in 1967, and after years of planning and construction, opened to the public in 2006. Plans continue for restoration of the outdoor amphitheater and construction of campsites, hiking trails, and an interpretive center for the preservation of Adirondack cultural history.
Schroon Lake offers up plenty of opportunities for boating, canoeing, sailing, and fishing within the scenic beauty of the surrounding Adirondack Mountains. Anglers will find the lake waters filled with largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead, northern pike, chain pickerel, landlocked salmon, pumpkinseed, black crappie, rock bass, white sucker, lake trout, and rainbow smelt. There are two public boat launch ramps on Schroon Lake (towns of Schroon and Horicon) and a hand-launching site at Eagle Point. The Town of Schroon Lake also maintains public docks, making their antique shops, collectible shops and restaurants accessible to boaters.
Nature lovers will want to bring their cameras to Schroon Lake to catch the local wildlife of white-tailed deer, black bear, beaver, otter, coyote, bobcat, raccoon, red fox, gray fox, porcupine and snowshoe hare. Bird watchers will be thrilled with a wide variety of song birds including flycatchers, wrens, thrushes, vireos, warblers, blackbirds, finches and sparrows. Ducks species include mallard, black duck, wood duck, hooded merganser, and the common merganser.
The Schroon Lake area offers a golf course and eight public tennis courts. With quick access to the mountain peaks, the trails are popular with hikers and mountain bikers. And when temperatures dip, the trails are prime territory for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
The Adirondack Marathon marks the end of summer at Schroon Lake. The roads around the lake form a 26 mile perimeter, making the area a perfect location for this USA Track and Field certified marathon that is held in September each year with the finish line in downtown Schroon Lake.
With the colorful leaves of fall comes hunting season in the Schroon Lake area. Black Powder, Bow Hunting, and Rifle seasons are observed. Local guides can take you to great hunting spots after the local sports stores outfit you for your memorable hunt. And during the cold days of March, the Schroon Lake Fish and Game’s Ice Fishing Derby is a premier fishing event signifying the lake as a year round fishing destination.
