All About Robin Hood Lake

Ringed with names like King Richard Drive and Will Scarlet Drive, Robin Hood Lake in the Western region of Massachusetts conjures images of another time and place. The small private lake is surrounded by a community of permanent and seasonal residences known as none other than Sherwood Forest. Nestled in the gently rolling hills of the Berkshires, this fairytale lake promises to transport visitors away from the hassles of their everyday world, providing them access to all the Berkshires have to offer.

Surrounded by the Sherwood Forest community, Robin Hood Lake is in the town of Becket. The town also includes Long Bow Lake, surrounded by the Sherwood Green community. Becket was established in 1765 in the King of England’s name by a Deed of the Royal Court of Massachusetts. Today Becket is largely a rural community made up of neighborhoods like Sherwood Forest. The town is small, but it has any amenity a visitor might need including restaurants, shops and various accommodations. Robin Hood Lake itself has lakefront vacation rentals as well as real estate available for sale.

Robin Hood Lake is a manmade lake created by a dam on the West Branch of Walker Brook (Westfield River Watershed). The Sherwood Forest Neighbors Association owns the dam and is responsible for water levels on the lake. Robin Hood Lake is private with no public access, making the lake feel larger than its 88 acres. It is a “no wake” lake ideally suited for canoes, kayaks and paddleboats. There is also a beach for swimming. Anglers can try their hand against the lake’s black crappie and northern pike. For visitors who prefer faster boating and water skiing, Robin Hood Lake is near the town Otis and the 1,085 of acres of water in Otis Reservoir.

The Jacob’s Ladder Trail is a scenic byway that passes through the town of Becket. It is a lovely way to explore the area around Robin Hood Lake. The lake is also about 20 miles southeast of the city of Pittsfield. Incorporated in 1861, the city has all the amenities of a city with the natural beauty of the Pittsfield State Forest just a few miles away. The state forest has over 30 miles of trails for hiking and biking. In the winter the bicycles make way for cross country skis and snowmobiles, and every summer the forest is covered in pink blooms with 65 acres of wild azaleas.

In addition to the natural beauty of the area, Robin Hood Lake is in the middle of the cultural features of the Berkshires. The lake is a few miles from the site of the internationally known Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and less than half an hour from Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony. The Berkshires host concerts, festivals and live theatre all season long.

Because it is only two and a half hours from both Boston and New York City, people have been fleeing the dirt and noise of the city since the 1800’s for the peace and quiet and beautiful countryside of the Berkshires. Robin Hood Lake is a great home base for any Berkshires getaway, and its private nature ensures visitors will find plenty of opportunities for relaxation interspersed with all the fun of western Massachusetts.
