All About Lake Huntley, FL

Lake Locations: USA - US South Region - Florida - South Florida -

They are sipping tea, watching the sun set across beautiful Lake Huntley and counting their emerging lucky stars. They were looking for a place to stay in the Lake Placid area of south Florida. When they found the vacation rental on Lake Huntley they decided to give it a try. With its beautiful water and all the amenities of nearby Lake Placid, Lake Huntley is the perfecting starting point for any Highlands County getaway.

Lake Huntley is connected on one side to Lake Clay by a channel and to Grassy Lake on the other side. The south end of the 680-acre lake is marshy and there are citrus groves to the north and west. Access to the lake is from one of the public boat ramps. There is more than enough water for boating, and Lake Huntley is popular with water skiers as well. Anglers can challenge themselves against the abundant populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker and black crappie.

Part of the “Ridge” in Florida’s Lakes Region, Lake Huntley has shoreline residential development including lake front vacation rentals and real estate for sale primarily on the east and west sides of the lake. The Highlands County lake is in the Town of Lake Placid next to the lake of the same name. There are 29 named lakes in the Lake Placid area including 27,692 – acre Lake Istokpoga, Florida’s fifth largest lake.

Highland County and the area around Lake Huntley were originally inhabited by the Seminole Indians. After the last Seminole war in the late 1850’s, however, the Seminole tribe moved further into the everglades. Homesteaders started to settle the area in the early 1900’s, and in 1927 Dr. Melvin Dewey, father of the Dewey Decimal System, moved to the area. The lakes reminded Dr. Dewey of his native Lake Placid in New York, and he lobbied for the name in Florida. In addition to almost 40,000 acres of water, Lake Placid has shops, restaurants and various accommodations. Lake Placid is also known for the murals that decorate its buildings. Numbering over 40, the murals can be seen by self guided tour.

Highlands Hammock State Park is a fantastic day trip from Lake Huntley. Established in 1931, the 9,000 – acre park protects a hardwood hammock and the habitat of red shouldered hawks, barred owls, white tailed deer, and the gopher tortoise. Trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding cross the park, and there is a scenic loop trail for driving or in-line skating. A boardwalk allows visitors access to a cypress swamp. There is a campground for overnight stays and a restaurant. The park includes a visitor’s center and the state’s CCC Museum. The CCC or Civilian Conservation Corps built several of the facilities at the park including a small botanical garden. The museum commemorates the CCC’s work across the state during the Great Depression.

With the area’s numerous and varied lakes and the Town of Lake Placid’s history and charm, Highlands County is a fantastic south Florida getaway. Lake Huntley is the perfect place to start and end the trip and a great Highlands County destination.
