All About Duck Lake - Calhoun County, MI
Located in Calhoun County, Duck Lake is a 629-acre lake near the small community of Springport in south-central Michigan. Listed as one of Michigan’s 50 Best Fishing Lakes by the Michigan United Conservation Club, Duck Lake has a reputation for producing large fish in great numbers. At a maximum depth of 50 feet, the lake is highlighted by shoals, sunken islands, weed beds, and drop-offs, all good cover for large fish. It is a natural lake that is closely monitored and managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources with water that is usually very clear, allowing you to see as deep as 25 feet.
Since records have been kept, Duck Lake has a reputation for producing numerous large healthy fish. When the fish are biting and the conditions are just right, Duck Lake has some of the best bass, panfish, and perch catches in the state. It is also an exceptional lake to fish for bluegill, black crappie, walleye, redear sunfish, rock bass, and northern pike. Hundreds of docks and large areas of submergent vegetation provide good cover for fish that, in turn, present excellent opportunities for successful fishing. Motor or paddle over to the north end of the lake to fish for spring bass and bluegill. Find perch, sunfish, and crappie in the deepest water.
Located close to the towns of Lansing, Battle Creek, Marshall, Jackson, and Albion, Duck Lake is within half an hour from many off-the-lake activities. Marshall, which is a charming community of only 8,000 inhabitants, has the largest National Historic Landmark District in the small urban category in the United States. With more than 850 nineteenth-century buildings, Marshall is ideal if you love architecture from times long ago. Fifteen miles west of Marshall is Battle Creek, home to Kellogg and Post Cereals. The “Cereal City”, as it’s known, is also home to the Binder Park Zoo, Kimball House Museum, Kingman Museum and Planetarium, and the Battle Creek Sanitarium, which was opened in 1866 and later featured in the film “The Road to Wellville” (1994).
Lansing, located 25 miles northeast of Duck Lake, is the Michigan state capital and home to Michigan State University. This quaint college town and original home of Oldsmobile has numerous parks and outdoor activities within its city limits. Visit the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy/Bengel Wildlife Center, Cooley Gardens, Fenner Nature Center, Baldwin Park, and Frances Park for more family fun. For some wacky science entertainment, head to the Impression 5 Science Center where you will see exhibits about Simple Machines. There is a giant human eye, a bubbles exhibit, and the chance to throw things (and not be asked to leave).
After a long day in Lansing and Marshall, it’s time to go back to Duck Lake for a tranquil, serene afternoon on the lake. Vacation rentals with out-of-this-world views are available, as well as real estate for those wishing to make Duck Lake a more permanent home. The close proximity of nineteenth-century bedroom communities, larger urban cities, and all the nature you could want make Duck Lake perfect for weekend get-aways or weeklong vacations.
