    West Point Lake, located on the Alabama-Georgia border just north of I-85, stretches 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River. The 25,900-acre reservoir with 525 miles of shoreline is a popular recreational hot spot. Recreational activities on West Point Lake include fishing, camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, and more.

    Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962, West Point Lake was constructed by impounding the Chattahoochee River. Construction of West Point Dam began in 1965 as a project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Completed in 1975, West Point Lake and Dam provides flood control, hydroelectric power, navigation, fish and wildlife management, and recreation. Lake levels for West Point Lake fluctuate between the summer pool of 635 feet to the winter pool of 625 feet.

    Fishing is one of the most popular activities on West Point Lake. There is an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie, and bream. To maintain a higher predator population, West Point Lake is managed under a special regulation for largemouth bass. Anglers should check with Georgia Wildlife Resources Division for more information.

    Fish at West Point Lake become active when water is released through the dam during hydropower generation creating a current. Although fish can be caught anytime, the best time to fish is when the turbines are running.

    A wildlife management area of nearly 10,000 acres is located at the upper end of West Point Lake. This area is open to the public for hunting and viewing wildlife. A Georgia Wildlife Management Area stamp must be acquired in order to hunt on West Point Lake. Hunting is permitted in specific Corps-managed area. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, rabbit, and quail are some of the game that have made their home on the land surrounding West Point Lake.

    Besides fishing and hunting, visitors can find a number of things to do at West Point Lake. Surrounded by mixed pine and hardwood forest and rolling fields, 27 parks and recreation areas and seven campgrounds offer a variety of recreation facilities including tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, fishing piers, picnic shelters, and swimming beaches.     West Point Lake visitors may also enjoy nearby attractions like Callaway Gardens Appalachian Mount Preserve, F.D. Roosevelt State Park, FKR’s Little White House, and Pine Mountain Wild Animal Park.

    Callaway Gardens is an award-winning, 14,000-acre garden, resort and preserve nestled in Pine Mountain that features gardens, miles of nature trials, golf and tennis courts, and biking trails. The FD Roosevelt State Park is a 9000-acre park where visitors can enjoy camping, cottages, trails, swimming, hiking, and horseback riding.
