All About Lake Lawtonka, OK

Lake Lawtonka is a 2,400-acre reservoir with just under 20 miles of shoreline located in Comanche County, part of Great Plains Country in southwestern Oklahoma. The city of Lawton constructed Lake Lawtonka for water supply purposes in 1907 by damming Medicine Bluff Creek. Built in the shadows of the magnificent Wichita Mountains, this area has an abundance of recreational opportunities and facilities.

Lake Lawtonka is located 15 miles northwest of Lawton and just north of the Fort Sill Military Reservation near Medicine Park and the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The lake is noted for its smallmouth bass as well as largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, saugeye, bluegill and walleye. Lake Lawtonka visitors have easy access to several developed recreation areas including full-service marinas, public boat ramps, boat docks, fishing docks, campsites, camper and RV parking, electrical hookups, picnic areas, grills, restrooms, showers, playgrounds, drinking water and concession stands.

Lake Lawtonka is best known for its monster smallmouth bass. The minimum length limit is 22 inches, and though it’s rare to catch one that size, you can almost count on catching at least one that will have you getting out your tape measure. Even though smallmouths are the dominant bass species in the lake, trophy sized largemouths are not uncommon. For those who like walleye, crappie and catfish, you will find them thriving in the lake as well. Sunfish are always fun for younger anglers, and Lake Lawtonka has many fishing docks and shoreline casting spots.

Wildlife enthusiasts won’t want to miss a visit to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, the second most visited national wildlife refuge in the United States. Established in 1901, the refuge contains more than 59,000 acres of unspoiled beauty and is home to such wildlife as American bison, Rocky Mountain elk, white-tailed deer, Texas longhorn cattle, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, red-tailed hawks and turkey. Other natural attractions include lakes, streams, canyons, mountains and open grassland areas. The refuge also has a prairie dog town. A 22,400 acre public use portion of the refuge offers visitors the opportunity for hiking, camping, rock climbing, fishing, and wildlife observation. A ride to the top of Oklahoma’s famous Mt. Scott reveals the vast beauty of the Lake Lawtonka area.

Near the entrance to Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the resort town of Medicine Park best known for its unique cobblestone architecture. This “Cobblestone Community” has become home to a number of artists and crafters who display their talents in numerous gift shops and galleries in the town. Vacation rentals are available near Medicine Park, Lawton and Lake Lawtonka.

Weather you plan your vacation around the fishing opportunities of Lake Lawtonka or the pristine beauty of the Wichita Mountains, the area provides a haven for the outdoor enthusiast with its miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, camping, and most incredible scenery.
