All About Fort Cobb Lake, OK

Fort Cobb Lake is in the beautiful Great Plains Country region of southwestern Oklahoma surrounded by plains, prairies and hills. The Great Plains, significant to America’s frontier days, is an area of charm, Native American legends and cowboy tales. The lake, like the land surrounding it, is vast and open, rolling on and on under the broad sky for 4,100 acres.

As part of the US Bureau of Reclamation Washita Basin Project, Fort Cobb Reservoir provides domestic, industrial and municipal water supply. It also serves flood control, recreation and fish and wildlife enhancement. Fort Cobb Dam, completed in 1959, impounds Cobb Creek a few miles northwest of the town of Anadarko and about five miles from Fort Cobb.

Fort Cobb Lake offers a number of recreational activities and facilities. Fort Cobb State Park, on the lake, has a visitor’s center, gift shop, and bait and tackle shop. Visitors enjoy boating, skiing and other water sports and there are two swim beaches, along with a host of camping amenities and cabin facilities. Other amenities are RV sites, comfort stations, picnic areas and marina; there is also an 18-hole golf course in the park.

Largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and saugeye are some favorite angling targets on Fort Cobb Lake. Bird enthusiasts may want to know that Fort Cobb was once the world’s largest crow roost which attracted crow hunters from all over the country; today crow hunting is no longer permitted within the park. Bald eagles and falcons winter in the area and provide other great bird watching opportunities.

A wildlife management area around the north of Fort Cobb Reservoir consists of 3,500 acres of oak, blackjack, red cedars, native grasses and plum thickets and is open to public hunting. Game species include quail, rabbit, squirrel, dove, deer, turkey, coyote, bobcat, raccoon and various species of waterfowl.

Outside of Fort Cobb Lake, in Oklahoma’s peanut country there are intriguing sites to explore. Get to know Amerindian America by visiting one of the many tribal complexes in the area. Go to the National Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians in Anadarko which features an outdoor garden with 42 busts of famous American Indians. The American Indian Exposition, also in Anadarko, occurs in the first full week of August and features tribal dancing, arts and crafts, food booths, and parades. Appreciate the therapeutic scents of lavender at Lavender Valley Acres in Apache where you may stroll through fields of lavender at your leisure. The site also features an annual lavender festival and a host of other fun events. Just a few miles from the lake, Woods & Waters Winery and Vineyard occupies a 600 acre ranch of hills and trees. Stop by for wine tasting and bistro dining in the refreshing atmosphere or attend one of the many winery events or festivals.
