Known as the “Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin” and one of the most productive lakes in northern Wisconsin, Big Chetac Lake is a fisherman’s paradise. Anglers bait their hooks to lure bluegill, crappie, perch, northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. Multiple public boat launches give easy access to the lake. With over 1,940 acres of water, there are numerous bays and inlets where fishermen can stay all day in peacefulness and not be disturbed by other lake enthusiasts. These same bays and inlets are also some of the best spots for ice fishing during the frozen winter months.
Lake enthusiasts enjoy their time on Lake Chetac by swimming, waterskiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boating, and jet skiing. Sandy beaches for relaxing, sunbathing, and picnicking are located along the 16 miles of shoreline. Real estate for rent or for sale is available along the shoreline, allowing you an opportunity to experience this contentment daily and right out your back door.
Lake Chetac is the top lake in a chain of lakes that includes Birch Lake, and Little Birch Lake. “The Narrows”, a channel that joins Big Chetac Lake to Birch Lake, is also known as a favorite fishing spot of locals. The chain begins at the small town of Edgewood and ends at the popular tourist area of Birchwood.
At Birchwood, Big Chetac Lake is just one of the featured lakes of the surrounding community. Many visitors choose Birchwood as a base for their visit and then sample the atmosphere of a different lake each day during their stay. Although this is a popular tourist area, the residents claim to have a blissful village without the hassles of traffic jams and stoplights and free parking to encourage patrons to stop and browse through their unique shops and businesses. Vacation rentals and overnight accommodations in the area are plentiful and include motels, hotels, bed and breakfast inns, as well as numerous lakefront resorts, secluded waterfront cabins, lodges, and multiple campgrounds and RV parks. For some off-water distractions, the Birchwood vicinity offers multiple golf courses that range in difficulty from Executive to Championship. Flashing lights, bells, and music will greet you at nearby casinos as you choose your favorite game of chance. Numerous well-marked trails allow biking, hiking, and ATVs in the warm months and double as snowshoe, cross country skiing, and snowmobile trails in the cold snowy months. Wildlife watching and hunting are also popular pastimes with the thickly wooded forests surrounding the lakes making a great habitat for many animals.
Not to be considered a step back in time but instead a reprieve from the everyday mundane routine, a visit to Lake Chetac will restore and revitalize you. With so many activities to take you back to nature, this trip should definitely become a yearly retreat. Make your plans, check your fishing gear, pack your bags, and head on up to the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
