All About East Lake Tohopekaliga, FL
East Lake Tohopekaliga, often called East Lake Toho for short, is located in central Florida south of Orlando. Covering a staggering 11,968 Florida acres, East Lake Tohopekaliga is circular in shape with a diameter of 5 miles, making it the second largest lake in Osceola County behind its larger sister lake, Lake Tohopekaliga. East Lake Toho is part of the Upper Kissimmee River Chain of Lakes, which comprise the headwaters of the entire Everglade system. Three communities surround the lake: St. Cloud, Narcoosee, and Runnymede.
East Lake Tohopekaliga is part of the Central and Southern Florida (C & SF) Flood Control Project authorized by Congress in 1948, consisting of a series of lakes, water conservation areas, canals, and levees. The South Florida Water Management District operates the C & SF project in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulations. A series of canals along the Kissimmee River and the Chain of Lakes control water levels and supply municipal water.
Water flows into East Lake Toho from Boggy Creek to the north, Lake Runnymede to the southeast, and from Lakes Hart and Mary Jane to the north by way of Lake Ajay. Water from East Lake flows into Lake Tohopekaliga (also known as West Lake) through the non-navigable St. Cloud Lock Canal at the lake’s southwest shore. Boat access to East Lake Toho is available in the city of St. Cloud on Lakeshore Drive and at the East Lake Fish Camp ramps on the north side of the lake.
East Lake Toho is beautiful beyond measure, and thousands of tourists flock to its shores here every year. Lake waters are exceptionally clear with visibilities of 7 to 9 feet. Outdoor activities are king, and you are sure to find a place to indulge your every whim. Chisholm Park, located three miles south of Narcoosee, has pavilions, public restrooms, picnic areas with grills, a playground to entertain the children, a volleyball pit, ball fields, a boat ramp, and a wonderful sandy beach area.
Situated along the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, the Lake Front at St. Cloud is another ideal area to take the family. Picnic tables, a boisterous playground area, sandy beach, walking paths, bike trails, and a boat launching area perfectly complement the shiny green of the trees and the sparkling blue of the lake’s cool waters.
If you want a one-of-a-kind experience at East Lake Tohopekaliga, go for an airboat ride. Airboats, also call fan boats, are flat-bottomed with large, airplane-like propellers that enable them to glide easily over the water. This unique and exhilarating way of seeing the lake will take you around its massive acreage, introducing you to various native flora and fauna. Glimpse fish beneath the boat, deer along the shores, and alligators sunning themselves in the sun’s warmth.
Though East Lake Toho is sometimes overlooked by anglers in favor of its larger sister, Lake Tohopekaliga, you will not be disappointed for the trophies lurking beneath its surface. Black crappie, bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, and redear sunfish are all known to bite at the lake, with bass being the most popular. You may choose to take your own boat, launched from a public boat ramp, or take a private charter for your fishing day in the sun.
East Lake Toho offers almost 12,000 acres of fun, sun, sand, and fish to amuse all visitors, so pack your bags and get ready for a wonderful lake vacation.
