    As the world outside goes by, a mother moose and her calf go for a swim in Sun Valley Lake. It’s not an uncommon occurrence on this peaceful, secluded lake. Although it’s just a few miles from all the amenities of the Town of Grand Lake, Sun Valley Lake is in its own private world in Colorado’s Front Range region.

    Twenty two acre Sun Valley Lake is a private lake in Grand County Colorado. There are several vacation rentals around the lake including homes and cabins, but the lake still feels secluded. No power craft are allowed on Sun Valley Lake enhancing the lake’s quiet nature. Visitors can explore the water and shore in a canoe or kayak or by sailboat. The lake is stocked annually with rainbow trout, and the catch-and-release trout fishing is very good. Because the lake is private, a fishing license is not necessary, but visitors do need a Homeowner’s Lake Permit. The wildlife is plentiful, and it is not uncommon to see elk, foxes, and osprey along with the moose.

    Sun Valley Lake is just a quarter of a mile from Rocky Mountain National Park. The nation’s tenth national park, it was dedicated by Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Elevations in the park range from 8,000 feet to the breathtaking 14,259 feet of Longs Peak. There are plenty of opportunities for mountaineering and backpacking along with miles of hiking trails. Hikers can enjoy the wildflowers in early summer, and in the winter guests can snow shoe or cross country ski through the park to see the wildlife including elk, mule deer, moose, big horn sheep, black bears, cougars and eagles.

    Established in 1978, the Arapaho National Recreation Area is a 36,000 acre recreation area near the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. It is part of the Arapaho National Forest in the upper Colorado River Valley. There is hunting in the Arapaho National Recreation Area for large and small game animals and waterfowl, and the wildlife is abundant. There are also camping options available. There are five lakes in the Arapaho National Recreation Area including Lake Granby, Meadow Creek Reservoir, Monarch Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Willow Creek Reservoir. Along with Grand Lake which is Colorado’s largest and deepest natural lake, the lakes are often referred to as the “Great Lakes of Colorado.”

    The Town of Grand Lake is the nearest town to Sun Valley Lake. Grand Lake became a supplier for the mining and gold rush. After the rush it stayed a tourist destination, and the historic village of Grand Lake is the oldest resort community in Colorado. Today visitors can play golf in the shadow of the snow capped peaks of the Continental Divide. There is skiing nearby and Grand County is known for its snowmobiling. Visitors to Sun Valley Lake have trails starting practically in the back yard.

    Sun Valley Lake has easy access to all the amenities Grand County can offer set against the back drop of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Its peaceful secluded nature, however, makes it easy to leave the rest of the world behind. It is sure to become a favorite destination for anyone needing a true getaway.
